Bate's meticulous research and beautifully written prose bring the Wordsworths to life. We learn about their shared love of nature, their passion for poetry, and their deep and abiding affection for each other. We also learn about the challenges they faced, including the death of their mother, the financial difficulties they experienced, and the critical reception of their work.
Through it all, the Wordsworths remained a source of strength and support for each other. Dorothy was William's muse, his confidante, and his best friend. William was Dorothy's protector, her guide, and her inspiration. Their relationship was a true partnership, and it was this partnership that enabled them to create some of the most beautiful and enduring poetry in the English language.
Bate's book is a must-read for anyone interested in the lives and work of William and Dorothy Wordsworth. It is a fascinating and moving account of a lifelong bond that was both inspiring and enduring.
