Sidescreen Triumphs: The Inside Story is the definitive account of the Triumph racing team's incredible success in the 1950s and 1960s. From their humble beginnings in a small workshop in Coventry, England, to their victories at Le Mans, Sebring, and Goodwood, the Triumph team defied the odds to become one of the most successful racing teams in history.
This book tells the inside story of the Triumph team's success, from the design and development of their cars to the personalities and rivalries within the team. It is a fascinating tale of innovation, determination, and triumph against all odds.
The Early Years
The Triumph racing team was founded in 1951 by John Heath and Ken Richardson. Heath was a former Triumph motorcycle racer, and Richardson was a successful engineer. The team's first car was the Triumph TR2, which was based on the Triumph TR2 sports car. The TR2 was not a particularly competitive car, but it gave the team a good starting point.
In 1953, the team introduced the Triumph TR3, which was a much more competitive car. The TR3 won its first race at Silverstone in 1954, and it went on to win many more races in the years that followed. The TR3 was also successful at Le Mans, finishing second in 1955 and third in 1956.
The Triumph TR4 and TR5
In 1957, the team introduced the Triumph TR4, which was a further development of the TR3. The TR4 was even more successful than the TR3, winning many races and finishing second at Le Mans in 1959. The TR4 was also the first Triumph car to win the RAC Tourist Trophy.
In 1960, the team introduced the Triumph TR5, which was a further development of the TR4. The TR5 was even more successful than the TR4, winning many races and finishing first at Le Mans in 1961. The TR5 was also the first Triumph car to win the 24 Hours of Spa.
The End of an Era
The Triumph racing team's success came to an end in the early 1960s. The team was unable to keep up with the development of the new breed of mid-engined sports cars, and they were also facing financial difficulties. In 1963, the team was disbanded, and the Triumph TR5 was retired from racing.
Sidescreen Triumphs: The Legacy
The Triumph racing team's legacy lives on today. The team's cars are still raced in historic events, and they are considered to be some of the most beautiful and successful sports cars ever built. The Triumph team's story is a reminder of what can be achieved with determination, innovation, and teamwork.
