In the wake of the No Child Left Behind Act, many schools were forced to make drastic changes to their curricula and teaching methods. While these changes were intended to improve student outcomes, they often had the unintended consequence of leaving behind the most vulnerable students.
One woman who has dedicated her life to fighting for these students is Dr. Nancy Sulla. Sulla is a former teacher and principal who has spent the past two decades working to improve the lives of at-risk youth.
In her new book, One Woman's Fight For The Kids That Education Reform Left Behind, Sulla shares her personal story and offers a roadmap for how we can all make a difference in the lives of these children.
Sulla's book is a powerful indictment of the current state of education reform. She argues that the focus on standardized testing and accountability has led to a narrowing of the curriculum and a decrease in the quality of instruction.
As a result, many students are being left behind, particularly those from low-income families and minority backgrounds. Sulla argues that we need to return to a more holistic approach to education, one that focuses on the whole child and their individual needs.
Sulla's book is not just a critique of the current system, it is also a call to action. She offers a number of practical suggestions for how we can improve the lives of at-risk youth, including:
- Investing in early childhood education
- Providing more support for teachers
- Creating more opportunities for students to learn outside the classroom
- Rethinking the way we measure student success
Sulla's book is a must-read for anyone who cares about education and the future of our children. It is a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play in ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed.
