As a young boy, Patrick witnessed firsthand the horrors of the Rwandan genocide. His family was torn apart, his home destroyed, and his life forever changed. In the midst of this unimaginable chaos, Patrick found solace in education. He clung to his books as a lifeline, a way to escape the darkness and make sense of the world around him.
After the war, Patrick was forced to flee Rwanda and seek refuge in a refugee camp in Tanzania. There, he continued to study, determined to build a better future for himself and his family. Despite the challenges he faced, Patrick excelled in his studies and eventually won a scholarship to attend college in the United States.
In the US, Patrick continued to excel academically, earning a PhD in education. He is now a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he teaches and researches the role of education in conflict and post-conflict societies.
Education, War, and Exile is a powerful and inspiring story of resilience, hope, and the transformative power of education. Patrick Jobes's journey is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, education can be a beacon of light, a path to a better future.
