The United States is the world's leading incarcerator, with over 2 million people behind bars. The vast majority of these people are Black and brown, and they are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system at every stage, from arrest to sentencing to parole.
The prison industrial complex is a system of oppression that profits from the incarceration of Black and brown people. It is a system that is designed to control and contain these communities, and it has devastating consequences for individuals, families, and entire communities.
The Movement for a Future Without Policing and Prisons is a growing movement of people who are working to dismantle the prison industrial complex and create a more just and equitable society. This movement is led by Black and brown organizers who are fighting for the liberation of their communities.
In this book, leading abolitionist thinkers chart a course for a future free from policing and prisons. They argue that these systems are not only unjust, but also ineffective in preventing crime and promoting public safety.
The authors of this book offer a vision of a future in which communities are safe and thriving without the need for police or prisons. They propose a range of transformative solutions, from community-based violence prevention programs to restorative justice practices.
The Movement for a Future Without Policing and Prisons is a powerful and inspiring call to action. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the history, present, and future of policing and prisons in the United States.
